My fingers have 10 years worth of muscle memory for playing Christian songs, as in 1-5-6-4 songs whose melodies never go out of key. I'm too used to playing in one key, and the only "cool" chords I can do are like 5 minor, 4 minor, 2 major, etc. Or when the chord progression goes 5 then 6, and in between that you play the passing bass note of 5 sharp or 6 flat.
I don't know if I'm making any sense. But for pianists who play church music.. can you offer me any advice on how to get out of this cage? I feel so trapped inside this one style of playing and can't get my mind to play in another style (namely jazz, like playing Isn't She Lovely with all those weird chords that sound so smooth).
Sorry if English is bad.. Doing my best to describe my predicament. Someone once told me to "just learn blues scales" but that didn't really help.. when I improv and stuff I always go back to playing like church haha.
