I'm pretty decent guitarist (and a pretty mediocre vocalist ), and I'm just starting to write and self-record my own songs. I enjoy playing across almost all musical genres, but I mostly focus on rock, blues, hip hop, and RandB. I'm decently competent skillswise when I play the guitar, but my knowledge of musical theory is literally limited to chords, the circle of fifths, and fretboard geometry (as in, I can listen to most songs and improvise along due to my knowledge of fretboard patterns). I want to learn a second instrument to self-record my songs so that they sound more complete.
I'm leaning towards bass. I feel it would come more naturally to me, and I feel I could come up with ideas pretty quickly. I also feel like bass is an essential instrument in the music I listen to, whereas piano is more optional. However I believe piano would be cheaper and easier to record (as in, midi keyboard vs. bass+amp). Additionally, I feel piano would challenge me musically, help me come up with songs I never would have thought of in guitar&bass. I feel it would also be more versatile; I'd be learning and recording all on a MIDI keyboard, so I'd have access to other "instruments" through GarageBand. As more experienced musicians, what do you think?
Getting both is not really an option right now; I just graduated college, and I have just about enough money to choose one or the other. I could, however, pick up whichever one I don't choose right now after I get a job... which will hopefully be soon lol.
