Hello r/learnmusic
New to this community, I’m a self taught guitarist going on about a year and I’m trying to pick up some basic theory along the way.
I just today realized that 7 chords and major 7 chords are different- I’ve always used the terms interchangeably.
But now here’s my question: now that I know what notes are in those chords, is it just a matter of memorizing major/ minor scales to determine what key they would fit into?
Maybe I’m thinking about this slightly wrong. I just got confused when I was fooling around with a Dmaj7 and D7 chords and realized that the notes in d7 are not all from the D major scale. The extent of my knowledge of chords in a key is I can work out the major scale going maj, min, min, maj, maj, min, dim
Can someone help me understand this better? Let me know if there is a better place to post this too.
