I am side chaining one of my synth tracks heavily off of my kick drum (this is for effect, not just to make the kick come through the mix, so it is intentionally a significant amount of compression). The problem comes in when the kick drum drops out: the synth track volume spikes (which makes sense, since the compression signal is no longer there) but makes working on the track unpleasant because the volume is so much higher. I know I can "fix" this using volume automation (automate down the volume of the synth when the kick drops out) but I'm wondering if anyone has a way to do this automatically (maybe another compressor?) so I can save the automation for later?
Most of the answers I see to this type of question are: "you're side chaining too hard," but I'm doing it for effect, so reducing the amount of side chain compression hurts the sound I am trying to create.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!
Edit: for clarity, I do want the synth to stop pumping when the kick drops out, so a "ghost" kick side chain track doesn't really help. But I'd like the synth's average volume to stay relatively consistent with our without the pumping effect from the side chain compressor
