Hi all,
I am in the market for a decent 2x2 audio interface ~$150 or less.
I know that, in general, audio interfaces at this level don't usually have great headphone amps, but at this stage I will be monitoring solely on headphones, specifically AKG K712 Pros.
My question is: Which audio interface would you recommend to drive these? Which USB audio interface has the best headphone amp? I have looked at the Focusrite 2i2, Behringer UMC202HD, Tascam US-2x2, and the Steinberg UR22 mkII.
Alternatively, should I really be looking at a DAC/amp? If so, which one for around that same budget? As quality of the sound is more important to me right now, I would be willing to forgo inputs at the moment. I am really looking at trying to get the best quality sound that I can from these headphones while maintaining their natural frequency response for use in mixing/mastering.
Also if you have any experience with these headphones, what is your setup and how does it sound?
I should add that I may be way off with my assumptions, as I am pretty new to this whole world of external hardware for audio. Basically I got the K712s to get better soundstage and frequency response than the Shure SRH240As that I have been using for the past year or so.
I have heard that with headphone amps you aren't just increasing the volume, but getting better quality sound as well. Is that true? Am I grossly overthinking this whole thing? (probably)
I greatly appreciate any help you could give me here, I have been thinking about this endlessly for several days now.
Thanks :)
