Hi guys! I have a room in my basement that I'm currently renovating and turning in to a music studio for producing electronic music. I've done quite a bit of research but was wondering if some of you can help me answer a few questions I have before I blow a bunch of money and time on this project.
The room is roughly 7' wide by 15' long. I have 2 Yamaha hs8 studio monitors. I understand the width of the room is a bit tight for the monitors I'm using but I hope that with some sound treatment it will sound decent. I don't plan on doing any recording of instruments maybe just some small vocal samples. The room doesn't have a closet which is good and is just an empty rectangular shaped room. This is just gonna be a studio for my own personal use and enjoyment. I don't want to get too carried away with the build but just want some basic sound treatment for a better mixing environment. I plan on making broadband frequency absorbers and bass traps out of Roxul insulation. I am planning on having bass traps from floor to ceiling on the wall opposite where my door is. Broadband frequency absorbers will be on all reflection point and a couple hanging from the ceiling. I don't plan on having any acoustic treatment on the side of my room where the door is because of the location of the door.
The questions I have are as follows:
-
How important would diffusion be for my particular situation? Should I have small panels to break up the sound?
-
Should my bass traps be made of solid insulation or 4" with an air gap behind them? Will there be a huge audible difference?
-
Is having the wall opposite of my speakers untreated going to make a huge difference to the acoustics of the room? Or will it be good enough for an amateur studio? Is there something that I can do to treat this area symmetrically without moving the door?
-
What type of fabric should I use for the sound treatment? From my research there seems to be quite a few different types you can use. If anybody has built these things before I'm wondering about their personal experience which ones are best (cheapest, easy to work with)?
-
Should my broadband panels on the walls have an air gap? How much?
-
Any other tips or things I should consider about this build that I may have missed or don't know about?
Thanks in advance for your replies. Sorry for the lengthy post but I just want to make sure I get this right before I do it so I don't have to go back and change things after I spend a lot of time and money. If anybody is interested, I might upload a detailed album of my build when I am done.
