So I've been producing for a few months now and I feel like I never really wrapped my head around compression. I understand the principal behind compression, in how it's used to control dynamic range, and how it can be used to sidechain (something I do often). However it seems like many people find compression almost as a necessity, but I hardly ever use it. I do often use a compressor to side chain things, but that's about it.
People seem to view compression as an important part in making a layered synth, but I feel like all I need to do is EQ to make the sound more cohesive. Am I missing something here? Any information would be helpful.
