I posted a thread a few weeks back asking if it would be stupid to get a subwoofer to pair with some 3" monitors, and most of the feedback was "get bigger monitors" and many people saying unless your studio room is treated, a subwoofer would be overkill and be doing more harm than good. I upgraded to 5" monitors but i still feel like i need a subwoofer. I am considering an 8" Presonus or Pioneer reference sub. I don't know how larger (6"+) monitors are with sub bass but i don't understand how someone can work on frequencies below 60hz without a subwoofer. Sure, your monitors might be able to hit in the 50's and 40's but its not going to be as loud as the rest of your mix. I feel like even without bass traps in your studio that someone should be able to properly mix their low frequencies by using reference tracks and testing on other sound systems. so why would you NOT want to get a subwoofer with your monitor setup? I just don't see how the cons can outweigh the fact that you will be able to hear those low frequencies loud and clear(especially for those who make bass heavy music). Thoughts on this topic?
