I currently own a pair of KRK Rokit 5's and am considering upgrading monitors, as over time I've found their sound to be very tinny with an almost entirely absent low end (should have expected this from a 5"). To accommodate this for casual listening, I've hooked up a separate sub rather bootleg into the headphone jack of my Scarlett 2i2 and I can manually turn this up as I like. Naturally, this does not work at all for production purposes.
My goal is to upgrade to a pair of monitors that I will not need a separate sub for, and that has better sound quality than the rokits. My fear is upgrading to something that sounds better, but still leaves me lacking in the sub frequency department. I want to feel that the entire frequency range is accurately covered by the monitors themselves, and that there is some degree of "feeling" to the low end - rather than "listening" to the low end as I had to do with the Rokits.
This has naturally lead me to the larger, well-loved, HS7/8's. Instinctively, the 8's seem like the surefire way to solve my low end concerns. The issue is the small bedroom sized room they would be used in, where I fear they would overpower the space they are in. The HS7's on the other hand, while likely the appropriate size for the room, have me nervous that I'll be "listening" more to the assumed low end like I was previously. Does anyone have any experience with the 8's in a small setting? The room is currently untreated but that will be the next step when the budget allows.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I would like to make the safe purchase with the 8's but don't want a muddy disaster sounding room as a result. Anyone with the 7's, please also weigh in on your opinion of the low end on them. I see many of the same outlets that claimed the Rokit 5's had an acceptable low end claiming the same of the 7's, which leaves me uneasy. Apologies in advance for this post sounding like a cry for moar bass, but it is a driving factor in this next purchase.
