In the newbie faq, Arnej says a track can be broken down into:
1) Drums (and percussion)
2) Bassline
3) Synths (arpeggios, chord stabs, sweeps, etc)
4) Pads/Strings (if the track has any)
5) Melody (the meat of the track, the main melodic riffs/sequences)
6) FX (what gives the track atmosphere)
I'm having a really hard time understanding the differences between bassline and pads, and between synths and melody. My confusion stems from experience playing piano, with arpeggios as the melody and prolonged chords as the bass, or chord progressions for both. Another confusion is that the melody is often referred as a lead synth, and I'm not sure how does that differentiate between point 3 and 5 in the list.
I tried searching for answers but did not arrive at a clear understanding. Could anyone explain the differences between those four points in edm tracks?
