First of all I'm sorry for potentialy low quality post. I am very new to playing any music, let alone talking about what I am doing in technical terms. I'll try my best to explain my problem though because I feel like I need push in the right direction to organize everything in my head.
I have small MIDI controller (Akai mpk mini) for quite some time and in my free time either after work or on weekends I'm slowly learning how to play it. I know very basics of music theory but I mainly depend on my intuition and what feels right. Recently I thought it's high time to actually loop a few chords or just few notes in succession with one instrument and already ran into first problem that I couldn't get my patterns to loop the way I wanted. What I decided to do instead is that I drew notes by hand in my DAW and tried to play over it. My first observation was that those drawn patterns felt different no matter what I did but I still gave it a go. When I actually tried playing over it some of my improvised melodies it all was very badly synchronised with the drums. After some time I finally figured out that for the drum patterns I recorded previously I could just change length of loop to 1 bar and 1 beat and after some more time I found out that it actually should be 5/4 time signature. Finally I ended up making some drums in 5/4 and improvising some melodies in 5/4 and it did sound nice for the first time.
My questions are:
- Why on Earth I am defaulting to 5/4 when I just let my body do the thing?
- How do I learn and get intuition for 4/4 or other time signatures?
- What kind of excercises should I do in order to gain the intuition for what I am doing? I clearly have some problem that I cannot name but it's probably obvious from this post
