A few days ago, YouTube introduced a new feature that offers artists a new and, above all, uncomplicated source of income. But it’s not just artists who get added value from it. Fans also have the opportunity to support their idol more efficiently and stand out from the crowd.
If the text is too long for you, you can also watch the essential points in a short video here.

YouTube “Super Thanks” is the name of the new feature and it is, in simple terms, the possibility to send money to an artist through a few clicks. The fans buy a sticker, whereby they are highlighted in the comment bar and then donate a small amount to the artist you want to support.
But there is one small thing to keep in mind here. YouTube also exists to make money first, which means that YouTube earns money based on a “royalty split.” To be more precise, YouTube earns precisely 30%. Accordingly, the artist receives 70%. We understand that YouTube wants to have its share, but we think 30% is a bit high. Therefore, a 90 / 10 or 85 / 15 ratio would also be fair from our point of view.
But where are the advantages for artists:** Through “Super Thanks,” artists get a new source of income for upcoming and already posted content. I can well imagine that many fans give away a Super Thanks, especially for singles or concerts that have already been released several years ago.
But there are also advantages for fans.** The “purchased” comments are explicitly highlighted; they stand out from the crowd, and possibly some artists will connect to their “Super Fans”.
But it remains to be seen how strongly the YouTube community will accept the new feature.
Finally, we would like to take the opportunity to introduce ourselves briefly.
We are a network of producers that joint forces to simplify the process of learning music production by creating simple, fully animated, and well-structured tutorials. We believe that explaining the concepts with animations and combining them with real-world examples will make the process much easier.
