My wife and I are self taught musicians. No experts but we understand music and can play multiple instruments. We've never had time to practice as much as we'd like to, but now our kids are a little older, they can do some stuff, and we are looking to play and learn as a family. My wife and I can play guitar, bass, and drums. Our kids, 7 and 12, pick up music riffs and drum beats pretty easy. The youngest really likes to ham it up on the mic. We've never really had a focus or goal, just played around.
What are some good songs for us to learn to play as a group? It's more fun that way. It needs to be something like 3 chord rock or repetitive grooves. Reggae, punk, whatever really. My first thought was AC/DC (the kids know the songs from Iron Man movies). I'm really drawing a blank otherwise. I don't know a massive amount of songs myself, more like parts and progressions.
Whatever the song are I would learn it, or at least understand it, on all the instruments. Teach it to my wife on all the instruments. Then whatever the kids feel like doing that day, we'll help them learn.
Extra points if the chords and scales used are common and used in other simple songs. Kinda like "now that we can play this, lets check out this other song" and be over halfway there.
