Hello Reddit,
Professional cellist here. Been playing for at least 12 years cello and piano for close to 15. Needless to say, I sit most of the day.
I am young, in my 20's but been feeling a slight discomfort directly on my prostate (I feel it). No pain. Some symptoms of trouble urinating (no issue starting to do so, but finishing).
I am other wise a healthy person.
My main concern is, I recently read cyclists have prostate problems sometimes. And it occurred to me this could be an explanation for what I am feeling.
I will go to see a Urologist this week of course. Don't worry Reddit. But my experience with healthcare professionals when dealing with musician specific things hasn't been the best. (Side note: I was once recommended to train cello on left side of body as well as on right side and switch bow/finger hands regularly to prevent overworking tendons...) Things like that. Also my teachers with whom I could confide are all women, they do not have a prostate. So I need to ask y'all.
Fellow musicians, cellists and pianists, we are always told to sit on the edge of our chairs, I have found that this puts pressure right below the prostate (between the anus and the scrotum). Should my testicles be hanging in the air when playing? I have found very little on THIS particular aspect of cello posture. And almost no examples of a cellist's side view to see how far back they sit. What can I do to lessen this malady? How to I choose a chair or modify one?
Any help is most welcome.
Thank you Reddit.
