PRACTICAL COMPOSITIONAL DEVICES!! Hi everyone!! This is my first post in this group. I am a metal/rock guitar player who likes to compose instrumental songs. I also dabble in a bit of Jazz fusion. Over the next few days I would be posting some guitar related music theory and how I apply these musical concepts/devices in my songs. It's going be super fun and super easy and I am willing to chat about them in the comments and also via DM. Today I want to talk about Locrian and it's Harmonic minor cousin Locrian natural/sharp 6th. The Locrian mode is mostly used in Jazz and fusion jazz. Metal and rock seldom uses this mode and the same goes for Locrian sharp 6th. Locrian mode is the 7th mode of the Major scale. So if you are in B Locrian the notes would be B,C,D,E,F,G,A and back to B. Notice that they are the same notes as the C major scale. You can say C major is like the parent scale of the B Locrian mode. Locrian sharp 6th, it is second mode of the Harmonic minor scale. So B Locrian sharp 6th would be the notes of B Locrian but the 6th, in this case the note G, would be sharpened and you will play G#. The A harmonic minor scale is the parent scale of the B Locrian sharp 6th. As a metal player I am all about chugging the lowest string. So the way I think about it is like this: I play the C major scale when I want to play B locrian and play the A harmonic minor scale when j want to play B locrian sharp 6th. A very important ingredient in this, is the lowest string. In my case it's the B. I am chugging on the B and in between the chugs and moving back and forth between C major and A harmonic minor. In music context and tonality is very important and in this case your lowest string provides that. Without it, you will just be playing the C major and A harmonic minor but with it you are moving in between Locrian and Locrian sharp 6th. Also when play Locrian sharp 6th give proper emphasis on the 6th note because that's what distinguishes it from a standard Locrian. You can obviously play chords that inhabit these scales/modes. However, I will post more about them later. It's already a pretty long post. Just know, the power chords/regular chords/triads which you would play for C major and A harmonic minor will work in this context. I made a performance video to demonstrate how to make a metal song using these two modes. 😃 Let's have a conversation going in the comments https://youtu.be/r0unE4kMwvA
