Here's his comment
thanks! gonna use this as a moment to ramble about my feelings on 'style'. I used to do really detailed work, concept art type stuff etc, but it got to the point where I dreaded making stuff because it was such hard work to make it look 'good enough'. Then I tried webcomics and just had fun with it, I hardly thought about the way it looked, I instead thought about the way it communicates. The early episodes are really rough sketches, but the visual style has developed naturally around the ideas and feelings. If there are any artists reading this who are concerned with "How to find my style?" I highly recommend you immediately focus on the ideas and feelings you are trying to communicate and don't think about the way it looks stylistically, your own style will naturally appear as you learn to communicate ideas better. Just draw what you love and share it with communities you honestly think might like it too.
The first thing that came to mind when I read this was the advice that is often given on this subreddit that beginners should focus on just making as much music as possible while constantly refining their skills in technical and creative mixing and sound design with every song they make. They should also mimic and follow the same style and formats of the works of famous artists. One's own style is suppose to naturally develop from doing this. It's almost stated as law whenever a beginner comes here looking for advice. However, u/sorasabi's advice appears to go in the opposite direction: find your own style first --> then keep practicing it until it becomes better.
So what do you think about this? Does this apply to EDM producers (or of any music really)? Is it viable advice for us? Or is the traditional advice on here truly the best advice? What are the goals of the traditional advice given on here vs. the goals of his advice?
I imagine u/sorasabi's advice is great if you want to go straight into having a unique character to your music. Whereas the traditional advice on this subreddit is great if you just want to create music that's good.
I personally like his advice and will seek to follow it. I have tried making music for the sake of just making it and getting better, but I found myself feeling alienated from my work, not being able to be very attached to it. I will still refine my style to have good composition and character. I just want to abandon trying to make music that attempts to sound like already existing work. At least, I want my music to be uniquely mine in the same sense that Deadmau5's music is his or Rezz's music is hers (you know when it's their song that's playing). But I guess it all depends on your goal.
