So I used to be of the impression that a 7th chord was a triad with a 7th put on top. A 9th was that same 7th chord with a 9th put on top etc.
However, I was watching a tutorial and the guy said he was going to play a G13 chord. He basically played the G7 chord + the 13th note. He left out the 9 and 11.
Is this common? Does the chord become to cluttered if we were to play the 9 and 11 in addition to everything else so we leave them out? Any general rules and guidelines about this?
I understand that you should usually voice the 1 (root) as well as 3 and 7 (because they are integral to the character of the chord), but are all other notes 5,9,11 optional when doing a 13th chord?
Thanks.
(also posted this to /r/musictheory, but was wondering if could get some EDM specific advice here)
