I wanted to get some thoughts on something that I imagine most of us can relate to.
When you first start mixing a song, before you start diving into nitty gritty EQ and/or compression, I often find that the song sounds more glued together. The mix is dirtier, but everything works together. Sometimes when I start mixing I’ll realize that I’ve lost the “feel” of the song. There seems to be a point where a cleaner mix starts to work against you - does anyone else feel this?
Some older recordings - the cure for example - have an incredible vibe to them but the mix, technically speaking, isn’t very good. How do you know how much to EQ something before you loose what made that sound THAT SOUND?
