Hi, I'm trying to maximize my 808 bass for this trapstep song, and I'm looking for tips on frequency splitting.
There are a few different routes I could take, and I'd like to know which is best.
1) one 808 bass channel in mono, split with mid side eq with side hi passed at 190hz, and both m/s low passed at 800hz.
I have soft distortion on the compressor, which might not be ideal for the sub frequencies?
Then I send 808 bass channel to an aux bus, put eq first in the bus chain with hi pass at 190, and apply Logic Phat Fx for distortion and saturation.
Should I eq again after phat fx?
Or
2) duplicate 808 bass channel and lowpass mono channel at 190hz. Hi pass second 808 at 190hz and put in stereo, leave centered, send to bus for same saturation/distortion fx. Route both 808 channel outputs to a bus and glue together with subtle compression.
Or
3) duplicate 808 channel twice, hi pass the duplicates at 190hz again, but leave them in mono and pan them hard left/right, then apply phat fx to the panned channels? And output all three channels to common bus.
THAT SAID-- Which of these is best option?
Also, should I be using linear phase eq on the sub 808 low channel? Or linear phase on everything? To avoid phase cancellation.
Also, would love tips on compression settings for all these channels, and common output bus. Should I use a multiband compressor?
Should any limiting be applied? I don't want 808 to sound too flat.
Should I cut all channels in frequencies between 250-400?
