Apologies for the bad joke. My question is, is there a general explanation for how a sound can be perceived as louder, even if there is not a significant increase in the volume. My question comes from using a synth with a "distortion" effect. When I add the effect, I don't notice a lot of increase in dB, but the sound becomes much louder "sounding". I'm somewhat competent with production, I just don't know the specifics. Thanks!
