2 Months ago I had a problem with supersaws, they didnt sound as wide and open as the pro's were making them. That got me into research and now I make spectacular ones, even better than the pro's. So I decided to share my knowledge in case anyone is having a difficult time. Tip1: Make sure that your saw in osc.a is less detuned that the second one.The knob should be around 8 o'clock, while at the 2nd it should be anywhere from 9 to 12 (Depending on the number of voices)
Tip2: Use Serum (They sound way better)
Tip3: Use a low pass filter, but have it cutting only the high frequencies out.I usually cut everything above 18khz
Tip4: Make sure to add some built-in effects from the synth you are using.I would add definetely eq.If you layer your supersaw with other leads or supersaws (which you should to get a massive drop),I wouldn't add reverb, delay or a compressor.Maybe a chorus, but that's it.
Tip5: Route your supersaw and any other lead you might have to their own channels on the mixer.Eq em (Everything out below 180hz and everything cut above 17khz) AND definetely use a stereo imager. Dont make everything wide cuz it WILL make your mix muddy. If you are using fl studio, you can use fruity stereo enhancer,it is a great plugin.Make the deeper-heavier sounds just a bit wide, your middle ones wide (around 15-25%) and your high sounds a little merged, maybe 5 or 10%.Experiment and see what works better for you.Make sure to be VERY careful with your volume adjustments.A 1db difference from a sound can make your mix sound like shit.Use pink noise for level adjustments.
Tip6: This is the most crucial. After you have done all that, you want to route all of your leads/supersaws to a track at the mixer.Make sure they are all routed there AND ONLY.Use eq again, then a multiband compressor if needed, delay, reverb. Now what I am about to tell you is the game changer.Use the plugin called fabfilter saturn and choose the "Basic Saturator" preset. Its gonna make your sounds awesome! But you dont want to end there. You need to go more balls to the wall.Use a soft clipper to soothe up the aggresive high end a little bit,but just a little bit to make it sound not to sharp. If you use fl studio, add a soundgoodizer and choose the best from the 4 presets.I mostly choose the A,it gives a nice crispy character on the saws and it feels like it makes your high frequencies sound magical. You can also use waveshaper and choose the preset "soft saturation" and reduce the mix of the effect to 2-10%. Maybe a sausage fattener would be good,or iZotope imager would be benefitial for some extra spice, tho they are not as good as the ones I wrote up there.
So that's it,it took a lot to write all this, but I am sure there are people out there that needed help about this. Have a nice day and keep producing, eventually you will become better! :)
