Hey everyone, A big struggle that makes me think quite alot about the current EDM scene is, that i don't understand how recent artists succeed in the mainstream EDM scene. If i take a look at what's played at recent festival mainstages (EDC, Tomorrowland, etc.) you can roughly sum it up to bass heavy party music with some pop influences. When i take a look at what these popular artists are releasing, it's mostly calm pop stuff (for example Avicii, Martin Garrix, Axwell Ingorsso, etc.). So basically (correct me if i'm wrong) a lot of these guys don't even play any original mixes in there sets at all and rather play remixes or heavy tracks from underground artists. Keeping this in mind, i'm wondering, if you start releasing soft, radio, electronic music as and unknown artist, is it likely that you even get booked for a commercial show where you can play typical heavy DJ sets, or are you rather booked for concert type of events (live sets)? What i realize is, that all of these artists who release pop music nowadays, have been releasing heavy underground music in earlier days, so they are kind of known for playing heavy sets. Does that mean, if you want to play heavy EDM sets, you gotta start making bangers and heavy EDM stuff rather than soft/pop stuff?
I hope my question makes sense to all of you, did my best trying to explain it. Maybe there's this key of understanding about the EDM scene that i'm currently missing ... hope anyone can help me out!
Best
