So this question has most likely been tackled here many times before, but I need a reminder.
I have a piano lead that shouldn't be any quieter, and a sub that shouldn't be any quieter either. After gain staging Bass peak is -16, and Piano is -22. Mix is clocking -4db before the limiter. Piano is panned slightly right. Sub is mono, with slight HF distortion in stereo.
I have the piano high passed so much that is sounds like its being played inside a tin can. Its awful. It needs to have some bass frequencies to sound natural. But when I add them back in, they compete with the bass and I some nasty phase canceling and distortion.
It just sounds like mud. Idk how to reconcile this. It'd break my heart to have to re-write the piano part.
