Beta testers needed for my latest Studio Production Template for Ableton Live.
Some of you may already be familiar with my Blendrix Audio Academy Studio Production Template for Ableton Live 9, which I released shortly before Live 9 came out of beta (over 4 years ago now, for those of you keeping track). Since then, I've been promising my followers an updated version for WAY too long, and now I'm finally down to the home stretch.
I've made some major simplifications and trimmed some of the less critical features to make this version lightweight and quick. It still packs a huge punch, and allows for enormous creative flexibility, but first and foremost, I wanted it to be simple and intuitive enough to give even the greenest of Ableton Live newbies a leg up, and help them learn how to use Live quickly, efficiently, and creatively.
Here's the current version (Last updated 07 Oct 2017):
Blendrix Audio Academy Studio Production Template for Ableton Live - "Lite Version" v2.0 RC 1
This release will be the "Intro / Lite Version" of my Studio Production template, and I'll be releasing more advanced versions later on down the road, probably closer to the holiday season.
With that in mind, here are some examples of feedback that I'm NOT looking for with this version:
- Suggestions for new features, or different ways of implementing existing features.
- Inclusion of anything that cannot be found in a brand new Live Intro / Lite install on a brand new computer. So, no 3rd party plugins, Live Packs, samples, nothing. This version of the template needs to be extremely newbie-friendly, so I want to avoid anything that would require the user to interrupt their creative flow to go find & download some 3rd party component, just to make the template work. I may end up partnering with a handful of 3rd party sample & plugin makers to compile some kind of "Ultimate Noob Starter Pack of Free, Legal Shit," and provide a separate download link for that, but for now, I want to avoid all that, and just get this barebones version released.
- More MIDI, Audio, or Return channels. The Intro / Lite versions of Live are heavily limited in the number of each type of channel per set. I want to leave as much breathing room as possible here, again, with the goal of keeping everything quick and flexible. Later versions of the template will have a few more Return channels by default, along with a handful of special channel groups dedicated to sound design & resampling.
"Patience, young Grasshopper."
And here's the kind of feedback I AM looking for with this version:
- Broken or malfunctioning features
- Mislabeled and/or incorrectly color-coded items
- Missing devices
- Typos, inconsistencies, or contradictions in the Info Text boxes of any channels or devices in the template. Every single channel, and most of the devices therein, have custom Info Text embedded, so if you hover over something, the Info Text box should tell you what you're looking at, how it works, and how to use it properly.
- Incorrect or inconsistent signal routing standards between different channels (e.g. if the sidechain input for Basses 1 & 2 are both set to the Kicks group in the drum rack, but Bass 1 is listening Pre-FX, and Bass 2 is listening Post-FX)
- Inconsistencies in the implementation and/or default parameters of a given device chain preset between different channels (i.e. the standard Bass Channel Strip, Instrument Multi-Rack, & FX Chain Selector should appear identical in the Bass 1 and Bass 2 tracks, other than any channel-specific color-coding and labeling).
- Anything I've accidentally left included in the template that would require Live Standard or higher to work properly. I only own Live Suite, and I've yet to find a reliable, convenient way to identify incompatibilities with lower versions. So, if you happen to own Live Intro or Lite, I would be SUPER grateful if you could just download the template, and let me know if it throws any error messages up on your screen when you open it.
Bug Reporting Procedures & Etiquette
Below, you'll find a list of known bugs and incomplete features that I'm either still working on, or that other users have already reported in the comments below. So, if you encounter one of these, don't worry about it. I'll update the download link with each updated Release Candidate, and I'll mark off the issues below as I fix them. If the issue you encounter is NOT in the list below, and it falls under the criteria laid out in the paragraph preceding this one, please use the comments below to tell me about it. The BEST way to report a bug is with an annotated screenshot, but if you're not feeling up to that level of commitment, just make sure you at least include the path you took to find the bug. For example, let's say you discovered that the 7th chain inside the Snare 2 Rack's chain selector was mislabeled as being the 8th, while the 8th was also labeled as the 8th. You'd report it like this:
DRUMS -> DR -> BlendrixProDrumRack -> Kick/Snare/Hat/Cymbal -> Snares -> Snare 2 -> Snare 2-7 :: Chain is mislabeled. No other bugs found in this device.
Known bugs and incomplete features:
- Return channels do not yet have custom Info Text
- Vox FX selector rack is currently undergoing a redesign. Still deciding if I'll include basic Vox FX presets in some of the chains, or leave them all blank.
- I'm considering changing the color-coding scheme of the Toms/Percussion/Other Drum Rack, in order to visually differentiate it from its Kick/Snare/Hat/Cymbal counterpart. They're currently identical in color and layout, because I duplicated the latter to create the former. I would appreciate feedback from anyone who feels that the re-used color coding scheme is either too confusing and should be changed, or if you don't think it's bad enough to waste time changing right now.
Thank you, everyone!
