I often hear a lot of people talk about how they should spend more time making music instead of going on music production subreddits. Ofc you should be spending a lot of time on your music. But I think people understimate how useful forums can be.
On forums like r/edmproduction there will always be lots of noobs but there will always be people whose style you fuck with. If you find these people, IME typically on the feedback thread, they are almost always down to collab.
Eventually you can find people to talk to about music production online, people to bounce ideas off, people who are down to mix your songs for free just because they like your music, etc. Yesterday I got a discord invite from a producer on r/makinghiphop because a few weeks ago I sent him a PM about a smart comment he made, and then he listened to my music and started a discord with other producers who have the same music philosophy that I do (very sample heavy and processing heavy), and now we have a cozy discord channel where we find samples and flip them.
A few months before that I found somebody who offered to let me get on their micro label so I could get in a few small music stores. I declined because I'm not happy with the quality of my music but the offer is still open.
A few months before that I found somebody who created a very interesting 7 minute remix of a 15 minute song I made just because he liked the song.
In short if you can look past the noobiness (while still giving the noobs some help- we all needed help at some point) you can find good networking opportunities just by interacting intelligently rather than spamming everyone like an idiot. I haven't posted my soundcloud publicly on any subreddit in 4 months and I'm still finding new people, getting valuable feedback on my music, etc. and I have only been producing for 7 months so my music is not so top-notch that everyone is clamoring to find it. Also most of it has no mixing and its average volume is maybe -15 dB because I rarely bother setting my faders. So I'm not reaping the benefits of a great mix.
Use your common sense and the Golden Rule and you can get a lot out of forums.
