When making a drum loop in midi, you can place in all the notes of the different instruments where you want in one midi track. Then pull each instrument from the Drum Rack to a new midi track. The specific instrument and its notes will be pulled onto the new track thereby separating your kicks, snares, hats etc. easily! Just discovered this not sure how known it was...
