What kind of methods or plugins do you use when making edits of songs?(bootleg remixes and what not?)

I utilize some eqing, compression, and effects here and there but I feel like my work never sounds as good as the pros. For example when I am trying to mix a section of SONG A that has the chorus I want but drums that muddy everything when I try to blend with SONG B. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. :)
