Hi all,
I'm releasing my debut EP through a friend's upstart label soon. I'm pretty satisfied with the mix at this point, and now I really want to learn mastering. I'll probably have someone else master for the final release, but this is a great excuse for me to learn the basics.
Can someone walk me through a very basic step by step process & effects chain? I'm working on ableton, with mostly stock equipment - and here's what I understand of the process so far -
-
Bring all the tracks in my mix down to a certain db.
-
Makes stems of the following -Drums (do I do kick separate?), All synths (do I separate leads from atmospheric & pads?), Bass, Vox (what if I'm using a pitched up as well as normal vocal), Anything else?
-
Apply EQ (I understand EQ from a mix perspective, but no idea what the goal is in the mastering phase)
-
Normalize volumes across all songs on the release (Is there a best way to do this?)
-
What am I missing?
Any input is much appreciated!
