To get straight to the point, I've been producing for 6-7 years now on FL Studio and every time I work on a new project I just start straight from opening the FL studio icon. Or if I'm already in a project i go to file > new project.
Now I have a general understanding of effects and what they do so I understand how a limiter on the master of a brand new project would be beneficial if I'm just having fun and want to make my stuff sound good with no proper idea of mixing and mastering.
However, now that I feel like I have a good understanding of everything is there a need for a limiter on my new projects? Every time i take it off my songs sound so much different and of course that's because I mixed and mastered with the limiter on. But for future reference should i start without the limiter THEN add it at the end when my song and mix are actually good and I just need to master?
I feel like a noob asking this question when I claim to have experience. But I can tell when I start without the limiter my sounds are much quieter and of course when its on they are louder. So should i just mix them to be as loud i want them to be when i normally would have the limiter on?
The only reason this has become an issue lately is I was watching a mastering tutorial and this kid had 2 eqs just making the high a bit more bright, a compressor that basically didn't add any noticable difference, and then Maximus with the bass in mono, a few adjustments to mids and highs, then on the master part in Maximus he had it set to limit at 6db instead of 0db and increased the pre and post gain which is where the very noticable difference in loudness came in.
The thing is I did this to one of my songs and it sounded fine in FL but i was in the red and it was loud like I had figured out the secret to mastering. Then when I exported the wav. it was clipping madness. I figured it was just cause that master only worked for his kind of song when I noticed he had no limiter on his master and I did.
That's when I just decided to not even worry about mastering because if every song had the limiter and I was already 10 hours into each song, turning it off would just ruin them.
Sorry for the long post, but I would love to hear some opinions.
