I have become a public domain film enthusiast lately as it makes things easier in getting vocal samples for tracks.
However, I have found public domain cartoons that make me shout for joy when finding as many of these cartoons are fun and expressive an easily usable... however I have run into a question in working with some of these works.
As you know of the big giants in animation, Disney, Universal, Warner Bros. and so on, have copyrights on characters (or at least it is safe to assume so) such as Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and so on.
If I were to use any of these cartoons and use them in my works, would I be breaching copyright, since the episodes themselves are public domain, even though the characters could be copyrighted?
TL;DR Can I use a public domain cartoon episode even if the characters themselves are copyrighted?
