Hey all... sorry if this has been asked before but I've tried doing searches on this and other subreddits and haven't felt satisfied with my research. So I figured I'd try to ask myself.
Background: I am getting serious about music production and DJing now. When producing I am running a lot of VST's and plug-ins in Ableton with many tracks when producing.
Currently on a 2012 MBP 13" with an i5 processor. Upgraded to 8gb RAM and 480gb SSD. It keeps crashing due to lots of instances of Serum, Massive, and other FX plug-ins.
I'v decided that I'm definitely going with an Apple and a 15" for the quad-core processor. Now my only debate is whether to go for the 2015 or the 2016 model... To be honest the 2016 specs and touchbar don't justify the price for me and I can get a pretty good deal on a 2015 model.
Follow up question: My 480gb SSD is almost full of samples and project files... when buying this new computer I'll unfortunately go with a 256gb SSD model. I'm thinking about buying a 2tb external HDD to keep all of my project files and samples on. I'm worried about having to use that every time I produce for times that I am traveling and even when I'm working at home honestly.
Has anyone worked off an external HDD before? Is it slow? Is it safe? Is it a hassle? Is the transition going to be tough from internal SSD to external HDD?
Thanks in advance.
