I'd like to share a thought process that I often go through because I find that it helps me complete tracks. It might not be relevant to you, but I'd like to try and help the community!
All too often I'll get frustrated with what I'm doing and I want to quit and delete all the work I've done. I'll try to progress the track and I just don't like the way it's going. I'll think that the synth is cheesy or the melody isn't going right or whatever. But really, the problem is that I'm not letting myself just enjoy the moment and let the music flow into the style it wants to.
An example could be this.
You want to create a tight techno thumper. You get the perc loop right and the bass is tight against the kick. Sweet! Then you start adding a nice arp. Ah yeah ok sounds cool! and then add in a nice tight snare! Good good, energy is flowing! ect
But then, all of a sudden you start thinking, 'oh ffs this is turning into a trance anthem! That synth is too trancey!'
There's the problem! Instead of exploring the trance option, you stop your creativity and build yourself a wall which you don't want to climb, and so you never will. The track stagnates because you so desperately want to get back that deep techno vibe you had going at the start. My advice is to notice these thoughts and push through with the 'trance', and you'll end up with a finished track.
In the end, really doesn't matter if the outcome is different to your desired starting point, because what you will have produced is a true and honest piece of work.
Hope this helps. Let me know what you think!
