Hey /r/edmproduction,
I recently bought some used KRK Rokit 8 1st generation monitors, and I've been having some weird issues with feedback and interference. I have a mid-2012 mbp, and my monitors are connected via RCA to a Behringer UM-2 USB interface. I also use a second display (HP S2031) via a Thunderbolt→VGA converter.
When my external display is plugged in, my monitors produce a buzz. The buzz changes in pitch and increases in volume as the content shown on the external display becomes more white. For example, when Spotify is on the display, the buzz is almost inaudible, but if I'm viewing a text file or something else that's mostly white screen, the buzz is quite loud and obtrusive. The exception to this phenomenon is that the buzz is quieter on Spotify than on a completely black screen. This feedback is present regardless of anything else plugged into my computer (i.e. charger, peripherals) or of what outlet the monitors are plugged into.
The KRKs also have a quiet hum in general, which is probably due to using unbalanced cables. Unfortunately, my interface can only output via RCA. A solution to this could be a ground loop noise isolator.
Any advice or input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance from a longtime lurker.
