Hey guys, I've had this problem for a while. I can mix things pretty cleanly and sidechain effectively to maximize loudness, and during mastering I can get my tracks to -4dB RMS pretty easily without any audible distortion. But then I listen to professional tracks that are -6dB RMS and they sound louder than mine.
Here's an audio comparison between my track and Illenium's Don't Let Me Down remix. His track is around -5dB RMS, and mine is -4dB RMS. But his is significantly louder than mine. How come? What are the factors that I am missing? Is it mix balance? Sound selection? More per-track compression?
I'm not worried about getting an insanely loud mix, but I am just curious about what exactly is keeping my music so quiet. Any advice appreciated :)
