I have been making music for about 5 years now. I adore both Ableton and Logic, and frequently use Adobe Audition for some video-related projects. I am currently enrolled in a class where the usage of ProTools is mandatory.
At first, I thought it was just going to take some getting used to. It took me a little while to get the hang of keyboard shortcuts and the interface of ProTools. I had a hiccup here and there, but figured it was just a minor inconvenience.
After weeks of using this program, its safe to safe that I absolutely hate ProTools.
- There's no playhead.
- It wouldn't even allow me to import an mp3 file.
- It appears to only support one video codec, and if the entire fucking file path contains a single slash or backslash, the program refuses to import it.
- A lot of simple things I'm able to do in other DAWs seem overly complicated in ProTools just for the sake of being overly complicated.
- The user interface is ridiculously clunky, and was nearly impossible to use when I didn't have a dual-monitor setup.
- I can't click on the timeline and choose to have my audio start from there when I hit play unless I have already made sure to enable the specific scrubbing tool that allows me to play from a point I select.
- Fuck that blue arrow at the top.
- If the audio interface is unplugged, the entire application shuts down. Not just a notification or a heads-up, the entire fucking thing just quits.
- Anything to do with sequencing or MIDI usage is just flat out embarrassing
- There are so many unnecessary steps needed before getting ProTools to actually do what you want it to.
-
The file management is a nightmare.

I am completely unable to edit video in any sort of way in ProTools. If I want to trim 1.5 seconds off of a video clip, I literally have to open Adobe Premiere, start a new project, import the video, render/export the video, import the video into ProTools- SURPRISE! Your video format is not supported! Re-export! Still no luck! Re-export! Nope! Export a third time! Too bad! Plot twist, ProTools won't import if your file path has any slash or backslash. But does ProTools tell you that's the issue? Nope. It just says the file format is unsupported, or that a codec went bad.
I know typing all this out while I'm pissed off isn't helping me, but holy shit, this program is (in my opinion) garbage!
