So I am interesting in starting to DJ and I have a question: in my understanding, when producing dubstep, keys play a less important role as many of the synths are made with FM synthesis, so the keys are more or less important theory wise. The focus is more on what sounds nice instead of what's good in theory. I know this is true for all genres but I hope you still get what I mean.
How does that translate into mixing dubstep as a DJ? I always read that you should aim for keys in the same scale when mixing tracks. But when keys play a less important roll, how do I know before hand which track can lead into each other. Just by the sound of the synths? Or should I start labelling the tracks I have with the keys that I assume they are in?
Thanks in advance.
