Vertical- using a different sound for each note of the progression
Horizontal- layering two or more sounds together to make one big sound
Transient- using one sound for transient, body and release
Multiband- using a different sound or lows, mids and highs
I'm not sure i used the correct terminology but this might help some people struggling with layering
