This is a problem I've been struggling with for years, especially when I'm dealing with high frequencies (supersaws/white noise).
I get to the point after a couple of hours of producing where I don't even know what I'm listening to anymore. The mix sounded great 2 hours ago, but now it's muddy and unclear and the stereo image is weird, even though I haven't altered the mix at all.
So then I take a break, and just rest my ears for 10 min. Then I go back to my song, and now it's lacking in high end. I then go and listen to a few songs on Youtube, and go back to my song. Now it's lacking in LOW end, even though I haven't changed anything!
For the record, I take breaks frequently and I monitor at low volumes. I understand that the ear fatigues throughout the day. But how do you deal with the ear's adaptability to other audio? For example, if you listen to a bunch of songs that are super crisp with no low end, your song will sound muffled and bass-heavy relative to them, and vice versa.
I know reference tracks will be suggested. But I get to a point where my reference tracks actually sound muffled and unclear relative to my track, because I have too much high end. I'm tempted to throw an EQ on the reference track and boost the high end, but I know that's not right.
Anyways. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
