I've been producing off and on for the past 2 years and have only completed 3 tracks up until now and recently finished my 4th track. I kept it at 'demo' status because I have been getting opinions from friends, and as of lately Twitch.tv music streamers, before I begin the fine mixing and mastering.
The track comes in at 4 minutes and has a layout of Intro, Verse, Pre-Drop 1, Drop 1, Intro, Verse, Pre-Drop 2, Drop 2, Outro.
The main purpose of this post is to just talk about how everything in electronic music is so formulaic. I submitted the track to 2 different Twitch.tv streamers and they reviewed it on stream. Both said they really enjoyed it and were impressed with what I have accomplished with only my 4th track. The thing that kind of discouraged me was that one of them said my verse needs to be shortened drastically because you should never take too long to get an idea across to someone, (alright, thats constructive I can work with that) and that my pre-drops weren't "normal" and to change it so that it builds up and drops. (why does it have to do this? is it because thats just all we hear?) My track has a build up but then falls out to bring the track down before the drop hits. I am a firm believer in having dynamics in a track and not having the audio wave looking like a brick.
Advice is great to seek out but its hard to receive proper advice from someone who only understands one style of music. It's as if they forgot that it is a creative process and not just cool sounds that would hype a crowd.
TL:DR: Seek criticism from others who have a higher understanding of producing but always remember that YOU ARE THE CREATOR. Ultimately develop your own style of producing.
