Hello everybody. Couple of months ago I have posted a question about how to make the kick in my tracks sound less overwhelming, loud, annoying... I have received many different suggestions from EQing and compression of the kick, to changing the sample itself. However, I still seem to struggle with this and I find it to be something that really holds me back, because whatever idea I come up with, I end up deleting it in anger, because I am just not able to balance the kick and the rest of the track. The kick always sounds too loud.
People in tutorials like the ones from Sonic Academy always just do some basic EQing and compression, but they never talk about how they level the kick in relation with the rest of the track. They just sort of do it as they go and then it turns out to sound totally fine. When I apply the same process, my tracks sound pretty much okay on big monitors, but on small speakers (laptop, phone, in ear headphones), the kick just just too punchy and loud and it takes majority of space in the mix. (While even when watching the tutorials on small headphones, their kicks never sound anything like what they end up being in my tracks.)
The most logical step for me is always lowering the volume of the kick, but then it just destroys everything because it gets overwhelmed by the rest of the track. So there must be something else that I must be missing/overlooking.
