Dear community of r/edmproduction, I am not sure if this is the right subreddit for this kind of laptop suggestion but I am big fan of yours. I am planning to buy a new laptop and as a DJ and spare time music producer, I look for performance and durability. I know that most producers use Apple's devices as it is state of art piece of tech nowadays but the approach of this company is very distant to me. As I said, my aim is at durability, performance and mostly upgrade-ability. My budget is under 1400 Euro. At first, I thought durable low-priced gaming laptop is the way to go because I love to play games with kick-ass graphics, but after some time and googling, I've decided that it's better choice to invest in desktop PC later for home studio. I've read countless of sites, offers and realized that companies which offer laptops with Macbook similar build quality keyboard and trackpad is only Dell or Lenovo. Dell XPS 13 has great reviews but there is one big downside of 1080p version and that's 8 GB soldered to mother board. Bigger RAM equals bigger display, bigger price and I don't need 4K display for DJing or music production. As an opponent, I've chose Dell Latitude 5470 with 1080p screen with samesized both SSD and RAM upgrade-able. 5470 has a way worse display, plastic chasis, slower HDD and probably weaker battery too. On the other hand, XPS's RAM is not upgrade-able, has less inputs, but way better build quality, display, weight and probably trackpad and keyboard too. Ableton Live system requirements stands at 4 GB's of RAM but it takes a lot more when all VST's do their job. So my final questions are:
How long will 8 GB of Ram last as some sort of standard for DJing and music production? Would you invest in upgrade-ability instead of durability and build quality? Do you think the 8 GB are enough for what I do? Which laptop will last longer?
