Hi, I just found this forum about EDM and I thought I can find some answers here.
For the longest I've bin searching for a powerful notebook for Ableton Live 9 music making. I'm a Windows user, that's not going to change. So mentioning the other OS is a waste of time.
I have found the ASUS ZenBook UX501VW and the ASUS N552VW. Specially about the ASUS ZenBook UX501VW I heard good things. To have the ZenBook with two 1TB SSDs (one M2) and 16GB RAM would be a dream.
ASUS does not support Windows 7 anymore, but usually drivers can be found for all the single parts. In my case it would be Windows 7 Pro x64.
Did anyone here manage to get a ZenBook UX501VW to run with Windows 7?
The ZenBook seems to make the rounds, and there are plenty of Windows 10 haters. So...
Additional inside info:
So yea, just looking at Windows 10 makes me sick. I don't care for the new weird structures under the hood. W10-phone-home-galore. I'm not a beta tester (any new OS). You name it.
It took me forever to find a notebook with the right specs. I think the ZenBook (i7-6700HQ \o/) could be it. I was looking at MSI notebooks too, but their fans are supposed to be noisy. And that's a no-no. The ZenBook looks good too, like the notebooks from that "other company". All the cheap notebooks on the market, they are better typewriters. If you want to do anything serious with a notebook, everything under $1000+ is a waste of time.
Some might say, get a system for home, you can even have 4ghz for less money. I need a mobile system. Being creative on the road, meeting with people to work on material, or even to show others live what I can do. If you have reached a sound that can compete with airplay, people (non-musicians) don't believe that it is you making this music. Until you showcase it live.
Last but not least, a few live gigs where I can make a dollar or two, plus free drinks. \o/
A home-computer rotting in the basement doesn't do me anything. (O_O) lol
I thought about partitioning the SSDs for various use. Having like 5 independent computer systems in one. About 1TB, a whole disc, just for music production. Video & Photo Editing. Writing & Research. Internet. And one corner for some gaming, since the ZenBook has a decent graphics card. Nothing crazy. GTA 5, RE4, and emulation of GC and DC.
Music-wise: I don't use many tracks in Ableton. Maybe around ten. Have a few demanding synthesizers like DIVA, plus older VSTs (Pro53?) and sampling. I go nuts on the effects though. That rules out all the cheap typewriter-notebooks. Core i7-6700HQ or bust! \m/ >_< \m/
Getting this ZenBook is a project for me. I need computer power without end, but I don't have money without end. Maybe I can make it in spring 2017. I could get one with an HDD and 8GB, and equip it with 16GB and two SSDs later on. The good reviews are a motivation. One review, specially about notebooks for music production, placed the ZenBook 2nd after the notebook from that "other company".
Now I just need some good Windows 7 news.
