Hi everyone, I have a piano chord progression I am using in a song, but at certain points like the intro I want a pad sound playing for added atmosphere. I'm talking about like in the Chainsmokers - Closer.

However, I'm not sure how to compose this. If I have the pad follow the chords exactly, it's kind of boring plus a pad is slow so it doesn't match with the fast chord changes.
If I try to use like say 2 slow chords, then I run into dissonance when the other piano chords play. If I try to use just one note, it sounds weak and not thick enough to add any glue or ambience.
What are the best ways to compose this sort of effect?
