This is probably a stupid question, but it's one that I can't seem to figure out! Any help here would be really appreciated.
When I'm mixing a project in Ableton I was generally told to aim to have my mix peaking around -6 or -12 db overall before setting up my master channel to be at the final level I want it to be at, in order to have a nice full sound, with some space, that isn't clipping or sounding too squashed. This has been working well for me but I have one issue...
In order to have the master at that level I need to have some of my individual tracks reeeeally quiet (like around -20db), and when they are playing on their own, say in the breakdown, they seem to cut in and out at times almost like Ableton is picking up a signal from them intermittently. It really makes them sound chopped up at times and loses their smoothness.
Does anyone have any tips or advice on how to avoid this problem? Or anything I'm just doing completely wrong?
Thanks guys.
