Broke my ATH-M50's unfortunately, need some new phones. I'm not sure if I should just stick w/ my Audio-Technica's or try something new. There's so many brands out there, but like Audio-Technica, I've heard so many good things about Beyerdynamic that I want to give them a shot. I also really want some open-back or semi-open-back headphones, so that's another selling point.
This is a all subjective, but what do you guys think I should do? Should I try out the Beyerdynamics? If so, 880 vs 990? I'm leaning toward the 990. Some people are saying they're wayyy too recessed in the mids, but plenty of others say that's not very true. I unfortunately can't get out to go try these in person anywhere, so I just can research and order off Amazon (and return them if I need to). Anyway, think the 990's would be an improvement over the M50x's? Or what would you say is the difference between the two regarding sound quality?
ALSO, one last thing...impedance. Ohms. I don't understand this much. BUT, I will be using these at home plugged into a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 audio interface. I've read completely conflicting things on whether that's enough to power the 250 ohm version of the DT990's. Would I have to buy an extra headphone amp if I got those? And if so, how much do I need to spend on one of those?
If I have to buy a headphone amp, that being an extra expense, should I just get the 32 ohm version? I mean, do they sound different? Will I be missing out on a lot of quality? I don't want to be stepping down in quality from my Audio-Technica's. And if the 250 ohm version is noticeably an improvement over 32 ohms, then maybe I should get a headphone amp now instead of spending even more money on headphones in the future.
Ehhh idk it's confusing to me. Especially confusing is whether my Scarlett interface will power 250 ohms. It's like 50/50 on people saying whether it will or not. I believe I read that it will power only up to 80 ohms, but then I have people saying they sound great through a Scarlett, so idk what to think. Any help with any of this guys? I'd really appreciate it, especially since I need to get some music work done semi-urgently and need to order something ASAP.
