This topic something that I consider myself to be a little bit above intermediate on, and although I can get my cymbals to sound good when mixing and mastering, I struggle to grasp the concept on how/why it works. It's basically usually a shit ton of trial and error.
Just curious if anyone out there feels they are excellent at processing cymbals and/or the high end of their tracks. If so, would you care to share your philosophy on how you think about it and go about doing it? How does the high-end of a track need to be to sound present, yet clean, and not melt your ear-drum? How much low end do you let through (generally speaking) on certain cymbals or cymbal groups? How much dynamic range do you let through?
