For me, there is something so discouraging about using a reference track. When I compare my unfinished tracks to one that is completely mixed and mastered I always assume I'm shit. I think the ideas I have are wrong, and easily get turned off from my own production. I end up getting lost in a forest of mixing and it turns my original ideas inside out.
I've decided to only use them at the end of my production when I'm doing the final mixdown.
I don't know if anyone else has run into this issue, but I've learned the big focus of your track should be to get it done.
