Recently came across this video and after watching it, I realized I had just watched 15 minutes of literally fucking nothing.
It takes him about 5 minutes before he actually does anything in the program (at which point he takes a long time explaining an arp of his). He spends the entire video talking about how he likes Session View, his "creative process" and workflow in very nebulous terms (ultimately without really saying anything). The title of the video seems completely unrelated to the content as well.
Most youtube vids about production seem to be like this- lots of talking about nothing and most of the time the maker of the video barely does anything tangible. Somehow, these videos still rack up views and get tons of praise even though they are basically 10-20 minute long videos of the creator jerking themselves off about their own 'creative process'. They seem to pad out their videos with a ton of unnecessary explanations of why they're making the video, usually end up repeating themselves over and over again throughout the entire video.
Why does he spend time offhandedly mentioning Reason and Logic in this video? Why does he spend 2 minutes plugging an EP hes' working on? Why does he spend 2 minutes explaining why he's using Session View? (It's literally half of what Ableton offers in its workflow we don't need to know why you use it...) Why does it take this dude like a minute and a half to explain what Sylenth is and that a fucking demo is limited use (no shit?). Do we need to know any of this shit? I don't think so.
Now, there are exceptions (guys like Virtual Riot and Slynk make videos with less padding, and actual tangible content) but I would say the majority of youtube vids I come across are like this. Even the ones that aren't completely devoid of content are a challenge to get through, such as SadowickProductions Ableton tutorials wherein he talks like a pilot and has to constantly stop himself from going off track, both of which make his videos an absolute chore.
It's so frustrating as a new producer that most youtube content out there is just pointless garbage.
Why is this so widespread? What youtube channels are out there that are actually good?
