PERFECTIONISM VS PRODUCTIVITY
When can I consider a track to be "finished"?
If you ask yourself this question very often, like myself, it's probable that you too find yourself spending extra hours enhancing your tracks by tweaking them further and making endless little adjustments before considering them 'finished'. Adjustments that are usually imperceptible to the ears of others, and that surely lead to a huge loss of time, and thus, productivity.
If you fell into that trap too many times, I invite you to watch this short talk from Jack Conte, amazing musician and CEO of Patreon, where he talks about the idea of perfectionism vs productivity, as it might help you it figuring this out.
I personally found it enlightening, and I'm interested to hear what are your thoughts about this.
My thoughts:
I, for one, think that focusing on imperceptible details can sometimes be empowering for our skills, it surely has been for me. Other times though, it's simply mental masturbation. Regardless of that distinction though, it is surely a luxury that most of us cannot afford to do all the time. Especially those of us who work for clients and labels on strict deadlines.
