Kind if involved an general question here about myself, producer friends, and my current project and what to do with mixes before launching as a finished product.
Background: I am in an electronic indie project of sorts, so not your standard EDM but it utilizes the same elements entirely with live vocals. Closest example would be the group Disclosure.
We've spent a great deal of time mixing ourselves in studio. Years of tutorial videos and one on ones, and really it's paid off over all. The production has truly improved with trial and error. The final issue is with a record we plan to release.
Comparing to almost any group we're into, major or still rather underground, we have marginally quieter music that lacks a professional sound, or polished as they say. We hired someone to master our tracks. He is a certified professional who has mastered very established underground electronic records, and of course this gets expensive. Upon getting our record back, it's still quieter, still lacking the punch of a radio song. We now can see, mastering wouldn't necessarily fix this issue. It's in our mix.
SHORT VERSION : Would you hire someone to mix AND master to finalize the quality... Or would you consider mixing to be something only done by you and mastering can be outsourced.
